being frank "it ain't easy being frank but, damn it, someone's got to do it!"
frank speak from the publisher of cool grrrls

February 8, 2006

This year we’ll be working on our tenth year on the net. We’ve seen sites come and go, but CoolGrrrls.com is still running strong. We’ve been featured on TV, in newspapers and magazines, as well as on other websites. It’s been fun, and I’m sure that it will continue on for another ten years. We really couldn’t have lasted so long on the web without the contributions of our Cool Grrrls from around the world, past and present; so thanks to all of you!

I especially want thank our Cool Grrrl of the Year for 2005, our editor and San Francisco correspondent, Miss Alisha Amnesia! Without Alisha’s help, our site wouldn’t be what it is today. Soooo thanks, Alisha!

This last year has been just great! And we've been staying busy here in Huntington Beach...Cool Grrrl Helcat from Australia, stopped by the CGs Headquarters with her fiancé, on her way back home from her European tour with her band, Spencer P Jones and the Escape Committee. I haven’t seen Helcat for a few years, so it was nice to catch up with her again. Also visiting was Glitter Grrrl, Michelle from Alberta, Canada, and her friend Sabrina. Michelle has been a contributor ever since she was in high school, and we had never met in person before; but I can tell you that she’s as sweet in person as she is on the net. She fell in love with Huntington Beach, and she and her girlfriends will be coming back out in July. And this June, singer/song writer Kelly Grrrl from Toronto will be heading out to the CGs HQ too.

Also visiting this year will be one of the original Cool Grrrls, Miss Mira Manga from the UK. She’ll be interning for a record label out here in Santa Monica, and driving herself from Huntington to work via the 405 Freeway. If you haven’t driven out here in Southern California, it’s a treat. And my fave, Sabine and her friend, Jasmin will be coming back out in September! I’m still trying to recover from the summer of 2004 with Sabine. She had us going to two shows a night in different parts of the state, for three months straight! Well...we didn’t go to two shows a night every night, but almost.

Back to the Cool Grrrls...Kastle has been keeping us posted with what’s going on in Los Angeles. In her last update, she wrote about her Sideways/wine thing up in Solvang among other things.  Kitty from NYC has moved to Sweden for work! I think she’s having lots of fun. At least that’s what I gather from her updates. I also think she might be partial to Swedish boy band members.

In Argentina, Kari has been playing some huge venues with her band Hyperstatic; and congratulations to her band being signed by Pirca Records! Pirca Records just happens to be owned by one of the most successful managers in Argentina’s music biz. Helcat wrote all about her trip to Europe and the States on her Australia @ Nite page.

In Scotland, our newest Cool Grrrl, Tippi has been doing amazing things with her new band, The Hedrons; who’ve been performing all over Glasgow and London. And for all of the guys in Orange County, Franki gave some good news: she’s single again! Her band, Franki's Broken Toys, has been playing some killer gigs as well. They played one of the Cool Grrrls Parties last year, and they’re really good. Franki’s band features one of my fave rocker girls, Miss Sharon Needles.

Sabine just wrote in with her recap of the last several months from Munich, Germany. Sabine also got to interview Nicke & Dregen from the Backyard Babies while they were touring in Germany with Social Distortion. I got to meet Nicke & Dregen when Sabine interviewed them here in Los Angeles a few years back, and they were really nice guys! I’m happy to hear that Sabine is keeping in touch with them. Last week, Chase Monroe got the chance to interview another fave of Cool Grrrls... Exene from X and the Original Sinners, so look for that being posted soon.

Marion, also from Germany, is living in the Canary Islands right now, so look for Marion's update coming soon. In Hong Kong, BB Chris has a new band called Guitars & Panties. It’s an all girl band if you haven’t guessed. Their bands’ slogan, "Sometimes we wear panties, sometimes we don't!" is very cute! Apparently they’re doing very well. Guitars & Panties is just one band that occupies BB Chris’s time. She’s actually in three bands at the moment. And our Vancouver @ Nite, Cool Grrrl, Mar is living in the UK right now. She just started a new band with none other than fellow Cool Grrrl, Miss Mira Manga! They’re called The Duloks. You can check them out at myspace.com/theduloks.

Have you heard of MySpace? Well it seems like all the Cool Grrrls have, and everyone else in the world too. Here’s a list of their pages, and mine:

If you haven’t heard yet, last year we started a skateboard label, called Cool Girl Skateboards. Our decks are pink, black and white. Musicians (that just happened to be artists as well) designed them, so they kind of have a rock flavor. Well, the company is doing great. We’re really excited about that.
Holly LyonsWe even have a skate team featuring professional skater, Holly Lyons; along with Felicity Corral, Lexi Barclay, and Alize Montes. I had the pleasure of traveling to most of the events held in California, and even traveled down to Mexico for one event. I think the highlight of last season was watching Holly compete in the X Games. It was Holly’s third trip to the X Games, and that’s kind of special. The X Games only invite 5 vert skaters from around the world to compete, and Holly was one of them. Another highlight was the last Wicked Wahine contest in Orange County. All four of our team members finished in the top three of every event they entered. It was a great day for the girls and our team. You can read all about the events that our team participated in on our CoolGirlSkateboards.com site. Also check out Holly's site at hollylyons.net.

One last thing...Diane (co founder of coolgrrrls.com) and I started this book project years back, but we got kind of side tracked. We wanted to collect dating stories and compile them into a book. We often heard strange, funny stories via our site, and we wanted to share them with the world. Now I’m working with my friend Kristen on this project. If you have a story that you would like to submit you can e-mail it to us at: theproject@coolgrrrls.com and feel free to go to: myspace.com/thedatinggirl for more info.

I know I forgot to mention a few of our contributors, so please do check out the Grrrls @ Nite page to cruise through all of their updates. Thanks so much to you, our readers. To all of the Cool Grrrls out there...I love you!

Frank
