Oh yeah, what can I say. If you are female and you have a myspace account you will for sure have stumbled across a band called Big Boy. In my eyes they are the male version of Tila Tequila. Although they have no record deal yet they attract thousands of female fans through myspace and they have already gathered a large fan base. If you have not heard of them yet you will for sure in the near future. Big Boy is located in Berlin but originally from Sweden and yeah, you know, Swedish guys, it’s eye candy, man. Their sound is somewhere between gothpunk, glamrock, industrial and Scandinavian punknroll. It’s not the invention of the wheel but it’s very entertaining. When they played a showcase in Munich, Germany this month I took the opportunity and sat down with the man behind Big Boy aka Brunhilde (as he told me his real name was). The interview turned out to be not very informative but very entertaining … however, this is exactly what Big Boy wants to do to get out there and have some fun. So here is my first boy band interview ever, hail the Big Boy!

Sabine: First of all, could you introduce yourself a little bit?

Big Boy: Yeah, as I said my name is Big Boy. My hobbies are swimming, anal sex and drinking vodka.

Why do you call yourself Big Boy?

Well, the girls I slept with gave me that name…

Is Big Boy a one man project or is it a real band?

It’s both. I am Big Boy but the band is Big Boy, too.

But do you compose and write the songs all by yourself?

Yeah, actually I work with my brother on most of the songs.

Your fan base is 90% female. Do you consider yourself a boy band?

Hahahaha. Sure, yeah! Absolutely! If a boy band guarantees me a 90% female fan base you can call me anything.

Was that the driving force behind Big Boy when you formed the band?

Yep, it actually was.

You describe your sound as the hetero-sexual version of Queen. What is that supposed to mean?

It’s simply Queen with a hetero touch to it. That’s us. We are Queen without Freddie Mercury and without the gayness.

What other bands influenced your sound?

Hmm… I don’t know. Actually Queen was a big, big inspiration. I personally love Turbonegro. That’s like the only band that means anything to me. And many, many lousy bands like Revolverheld and stuff like that. They inspired us by being so lousy. They make us so mad and aggressive so we do what we do.

(Editor: Revolverheld means gunslinger in German and they are a really lousy pseudo punkrock band with terrible lyrics.)

Outfit, style and looks seem to be pretty important for the band. What was the inspiration for that?

Actually that’s simply what I wear. I mean, I don’t look like that everyday but I wear all of it in private, too. It’s like no real concept. Everybody thinks so but it’s not. There is no silly stylist behind my looks. At the very beginning when we took the first pictures there was this girl who helped us out a little bit but we don’t really need that.

Ok, now I have one-word-questions for you. I just give you one word and you simply tell me what pops up in your mind. Ok? Ready?

Yep.

Groupies?

Enough.

Pink?

Nice ass.

Bunnies?

Delicious. I love meat.

Do you have many gay fans?

Well, we have one gay fan… He is actually here tonight. He came all the way from Berlin. You will see him. He makes up for a whole gay scene, I tell you….

(Editor: I actually saw him. Impossible NOT to see this guy!)

I would say that you are the male Tila Tequila on myspace. Tila has like the most guy friends and you have the most girl fans. What do you think of myspace? Is it the new MTV? What do you think?

It’s so much better than MTV. Fuck MTV. Myspace is so democratic. Everyone can upload four songs. You can’t cheat.

What do you mean ‘you can’t cheat’?

Well, it’s like if people like what you do, they will tell you and if they don’t like it they will also tell you. You can’t buy airplay like you can on MTV. You don’t need a big bad record company to get many people to listen to you. I love it. Everything I have right now is due to myspace, honestly.

What are you expecting of the showcase tonight?

I don’t expect anything. You should never expect anything. A year ago we tried so hard to suck up to all the industry people and we totally gave up on that. We play for those people who came to see us tonight. If a record company decides to sign us tonight it would be very nice because we are all super broke. But if they don’t we don’t give a shit, either.

What are your future plans?

I actually try to gain some weight and some muscles. That’s really one of my goals. I try to eat three times a day and I will go to the gym. That’s really something I want to do.

Ok, any last words? Anything you would like to add?

Shave your bushes!
