Sorry bout the Delay
Well hi there all,
I’m back in Oz again….ohhhh….it’s been so long since I wrote! Sorry ’bout that…I kinda got sidetracked…sufferin’ jet lag, sufferin’ post travel blues… It’s been three weeks since I’ve been back ALREADY! wow.
Well I’ll just let you know what else happened in the U.S. of A. now shall I? where was I? Ahh yes..Linda’s Doll Hut
Sun 2nd April…we got the closest to Disneyland as I could, playing at this cool little bar in Anaheim, the legendary, Linda’s Doll Hut, where you just might stumble across some great muso’s doing some secret shows…The Conditionz supported us. They told us that they had been together for 15 years and this was their third gig! They sounded pretty loose
but were fun. They did a great cover of the Rolling Stones, ‘Send Me Dead Roses’. Frank and Diane from coolgrrrls came along as well as Awesome Frank from Freak Machine, Tim from the Angoras, Andrew their manager…top night was had by all and we even took a little bit of Disney home with us!!
Mon 3rd April.. Played at Spaceland…what a cool place…I was so glad to see that they had a special ‘smoking’ room?boy was it smoky all right, you don’t need a cigarette to smoke, just breath in the atmosphere…loved the décor with bike helmets for lamp shades, booth seats that had a real weird sound echo about them.. Waco played a brilliant show, the lovely Jenn X from coolgrrrls plays flute in the band. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a band quite like it, an 11 piece orchestra, they had drums, bass, flutes, piano, keyboards, violin, oboe, all sorts of instruments. It was so funny when we played we had a guy doing break dancing to us, you know doing the spins on the floor and everything…I’ve never seen any dancing like it at a Moler gig before!
Tues 4th April..Played at Fais Do Do, really great place, nice stage…we played with the band Snapher. It was an all ages gig, lots of young punks. There was some documentary being made tonight to do with the punk scene..
Wed 5th April..played at The Pretty Ugly Club at Dragonfly’s. Major bumma tonight, I didn’t get to play through a bass rig but I had it going through the PA ok so I could just hear it. We played with US Crush, Jet 68, and Coyote Shivers. Coyote Shivers were awesome, great pop punk anthems. Even Texas Terri and the Sister’s Grim got up to sing back ups for song. It was a pretty happening night, met lots of interesting people, even the gorgeous Barbie coolgrrrl was there, and had a great time.
Thurs 6th April Played at The Coconut Teaser with Pissant, White Trash Debutantes and a couple of others bands?once again a punk rock night.
Fri 7th April Gypsy Lounge with 3rd Grade Teacher, Snap her and Street Walkin’ Cheetahs. Hey this was one hell of a line up! Wow, I even met the bassist John from ‘Social Distortion’. The Gypsy Lounge had a great vibe about it, lots of gypsy women paintings on the walls and what’s more, you could smoke in there! Mind you Julien enjoyed a little too much tequila tonight! By the end of the night I was so taken by the energy of the Street Walkin’ Cheetahs, I lost all control and started dancing like a woman possessed…and no, I wasn’t even drunk!
Sat 8th April Drove up to Chico The band Oddman who we played with in Mesa, Phoenix, got us a show in their home town, Chico. So we thought what the hell let’s drive on up there. Quite a drive really….Chico is just inland from San Francisco. The bar manager was way cool, owned this great big tattoo shop next to his bar, apparently he had tattooed The Living End from Australia!
Sun 9th April Gold fingers, cool little bar right in the middle of LA. Decked out in gold with a big gold birdcage inside, I was tempted to play the show in it..but it would of been hard to play the bass in a cage…. Played with Divine Chaos who were like Ramones rock’n roll. They gave us a CD that sounds cool too. This was our very last gig in LA. We had a great time cos lots of our new found friends came along. A special thank to Greg and the drummer from the band Project K who brought a drum
kit along for us.
Mon 10th April Tonight we went to see the legendary Wayne Kramer, guitarist from MC5, play his solo stuff. Mike and Frank from the StreetWalkin’ Cheetahs also play in Wayne’s band. It was a pretty slick performance but the audience seemed a little older, a kind of sit down dinner type of affair. Still, it was a great show.
Tues 11th April Tonight, Mike (moler drummer) and I decided to head into LA for our last taste of the LA nite life. We went to the Opium Den, which was a great little venue, I wished we hadn’t of missed our gig there…rats….saw some girls playing in a band I forget the name of.. then I headed of to Spaceland to see The Warlocks and The Brian Jones Town Massacre play. These bands were so different from what I expected. I had seen so much punk rock lately. The Warlocks were 4 guitarists, 2 drummers, bass and a tambourine player who kinda reminded me of a pre blonde Nico. In fact the music was very Velvet Underground, with a bit of Jefferson Airplane, the byrds…hmmm…and BJTM were like the Stones, very jangly english sounding…hmmm I got a bit drunk tonight thanks to a friend ….vodka stolis…yum
Wed 12th April ..vodka stolis…groan…hangover city! Had to wake up early, feeling like hell raised, I drove the mini van back to the airport….then Frank
took us to a great little restaurant for an amazing breakfast, thank god that made me feel better. Tonight Frank and Di were throwing a Rock and Roll Bar Be Cue..(one of the members Rock star BBQ was actually there!) Lots of our pals came along for a some delectable food by Diane, we smoked cigars, drank beer, wine, vodka and talked about chickens! No…we talked about…what did we talk about?
Thurs 13th April…oh, sad days, today we left for Australia…I have to say the Frank and Diane are the coolest people to hang out with….Sitting on the plane waiting for the take off. A message comes over the speakers, ‘sorry we can’t take off yet, we are having heating problems in the cargo hold’. AAAAHHHHH…LLLEETT MEEE OOOFFFFF !!!! The plane didn’t crash. I wasn’t reassured even when on the news back in Australia, there had been a Quantas accident- the wheels fell off, a Phillipines airline accident, some racing car driver survived a leer jet crash…hhmmm..what does this tell one?
Well there you have it, what can I say, I had a fantastic time and met so many cool people. I can’t wait to get back over there real soon. Moler loves and misses you all.xxxxxxxxxxx
Lately, Moler have been playing a residency at the Esplanade Hotel, St.Kilda, with new up and coming bands each week. It’s been really good to catch up with all our friends again. But boy, I am having trouble adapting to
Australian beer. It’s so strong that I get trashed after only a couple of drinks…So come along next Thursday to see our last show at the Espy. Might even throw in a Cheap Trick cover…
Friday gone, Moler caught the bus up to Sydney to play at Bar Broadway with High Society, who sounded a little like the Street Walkin’ Cheetahs, they were so flattered when I told them that, they love the Street Walkin’ Cheetahs (as do I)..and we also played with The Howlin’ Moondoggies, they’re a rockabilly band, really great stuff, they certainly got the crowd a shakin’. We had a good show too, I couldn’t believe how loud the foldback monitors were. I could actually hear every word I sang, which is a rare thing! Then we stayed up all night drinking and doing a bit of boogying on the dance floor until 7.30 in the morning and caught the bus back to Melbourne…a very short trip to
Sydney but plenty of fun.
Last night I went to the Evelyn Hotel and saw the show put together for William Authur, the singer songwriter from Sydney band, ‘Glide’. Great to see so many fellow musicians and friends there to celebrate William’s life and work.
I hear there are more Moler shows coming up, I’ll let you know in my next update but for now stay rockin’!
love
