4th of July a Blast

July started off spicy with a hint of pepper in the air at the annual Hootenanny rockabilly music and hot rod/custom car festival. With past headliners such as Mike Ness, the Cramps, and the Supersuckers, this has become the place to be on the 4th of July holiday weekend in O.C. This year’s headliner was the talented and pretty Chris Isaak who put on an amazing performance and left all the girls shaking in their bloomers. My favorite Hootenanny performer of all time has been Reverend Horton Heat and I was glad to see his return. It was a hot day to begin with and Reverened turned up the heat even higher. Like bubbles in a pot of boiling water the audience was rapidly bouncing into one another and some even rose to the top to float towards the stage. That’s when Chef Boy-o-Bouncer decided to add a little pepper spray just to season things up. Fortunately I only got a little of the fallout and was able to maintain my position in the pot and took the hottest picture of the holy one.

It’s been awhile since I’ve gone out in Old Town Fullerton and I was surprised to see how much things have changed and yet how they’ve remained the same. There’s all kinds of new bars, restaurants and shops right along side the old town fixtures which makes Downtown Fullerton a great place to shop, dine and be entertained. And entertained I was on one Friday night at Stubrik’s Steakhouse by Sir Stand and his band with their featured female vocalist, Ms. Jackie Jackson. This lady was incredible! She had the whole place jumpin’ in no time by singing old Tina Turner and Etta James songs and playing the harmonica like nobody’s business.

It’s been an even longer time since I’ve gone to Universal Studios Theme Park (about 20 years).
Here’s is another example of a place that has changed so much over the years and yet the old attractions you remember as a kid remain. They still have Jaws, King Kong, the Flood Scene and the Parting of the Red Sea attractions as well as some newer ones like Terminator 2:3D, Jurrassic Park, Back to the Future and Backdraft. I’d have to say I got the biggest kick out of T-2:3D’s short, overweight Arnold Schwarzenegger Impersonator.

After KROQ’s Weenie Roast Mega Concert in June I vowed, no more Mega Concerts this summer. Yeah right, all you have to do is waive a free ticket in front of my face and I’m there. Where? The Summer Sanitarium Concert at the huge L.A. Memorial Coleseum. Metallica, Korn, Kid Rock, System Of A Down and Powerman 5000. This concert was too big. The performers looked like fleas. Mark my words, “No New Mega Concerts”. So…are you going to Tattoo the Earth? How about Ozzfest? Me neither man, fuck that! I remember those little bands before they were famous. They used to play little clubs like the Rhino Room. Those were the days man! Fuck those big concerts man! (I’ll probably see you there).

Speaking of the Rhino Room…
Now for the most exciting news of all! “The Rock Show” presents the return of METAL to O.C. every Wednesday at Rhino Room in Huntington Beach. July 19th was the Grand Opening of this badly needed weekly club. So far the bands I’ve seen are Crisis, Shiva, County, Moneyshot, Drove, Denied Reality. The DJ in-between bands is DJ 9-Volt, a super hot chick DJ that serves up a healthy portion of Classic Metal, (Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, AC-DC, Van Halen, Kiss) with a side of Heavy/Speed Metal, (Ozzy, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Dio, Slayer) a pinch of Big Hair 80′s, (Motley Crue, Ratt, Scorpions, Twisted Sister) a dash of new Hardcore, (Slipknot, System Of A Down, Deftones, Coal Chamber) and some Local music (hed pe, Anyone, Rooster) that makes for a nice garnish.

The Orange County Fair was the perfect way to end the month of July. The theme this year was, “Hot, Hot, Hot” and Charo, “The Internationale’ Hot Tamale’” was the featured entertainer last Thursday. She’s most famous for her, “Coochi Coochi”. As a matter of fact, she says that coochi coochi is what has kept her so youthful looking over her many years as a dancer, singer, comedienne and accomplished guitarist. She put on a great show and still looks as hot and spicy as ever.
