Tokyo Pop Fes
Hello there! Here is my first report from Tokyo. I don’t write in English very well, but I hope you enjoy it. Please check my website http://www.mars.dti.ne.jp/~yayoi/ out if you read Japanese. I think that for me writing in Japanese is better than English.
There was a festival called “TOKYO POP FES.” at Shelter in Shimokitazawa on September 3rd, it was a pretty small event but we had some fab Japanese bands like Clean Boy * Messy Girl, Swarm’s Arm and another two bands. I will tell you about my favorite band Clean Boy * Messy Girl today.
Their playing was simple and a bit of punk. Most of the songs were sang by Nobi who lives in NYC (USA) and another member Tomomi, who lives in Fukui, Japan, played the guitar. Their songs are sometimes funny, and it always makes me happy. Nobi sings in English about pillows and record shopping for indie pop addicts.
Tomomi also sang a song at the show. It was beautiful. I wanted to hear more of her songs! Tomomi and Nobi were in a band called Kumari before Clean Boy * Messy Girl. Kumari was similar to Clean Boy * Messy Girl, but Tomomi was a main vocalist. You will like them if you’re a fan of Avocado Baby. I really like her voice and the sense of lyrics. There’s a song called “Yellow Is A Color For Pop Songs”. I asked her, “Why is yellow a color for pop song?” She replied, “On the cover of Lois’s best album “Butter Yellow” is a beautiful yellow. So Yellow is a color for pop songs”. I agreed with her.
Tomomi does a zine called “two pico.” which includes a cassette. It has only one issue, but she did another zine “Starsign” before two pico. She interviewed with great bands and people in three issues. I learned about being punk from them.
I heard that Nobi is coming back to Japan again in the end of this year, and then Clean Boy * Messy Girl is playing somewhere in Tokyo. You should check it out if you’re staying in Tokyo during the winter.
I’m a huge fan of Yoko Ono. Please let me know if you’ve been to her exhibition (this tour is the US only). Of course, friendly e-mails are always welcome. I’m looking for Yoko manias!
