Music at its Best in Philly
Don’t look now…but Philly is set to explode!!!! Ever since our loveable, world traveling, hiphop band The Roots won the Grammy, Philly’s music scene just hasn’t stopped groovin’ . Check Jill Scott (her new album “Who is Jill Scott”) blowin’up charts and landing alongside spoken word diva Ursula Rucker and Vikter Duplaix on much coveted global dj playlists … Jaguar and Flo Brown representing the Black Lily vibe@ Philly’s 5 Spot lounge ( 5& Bank st), keepin’ sh*t. real Host Ryva keeps the crowd bathed in positive vibes, while the heads nod in front of the mad talent on stage. Crazy Philly talent like this merged and boiled over for a hot second at the world-renowned Trocadero theatre for the City Paper Music Awards 2000. Hardcore industry peeps were in the house like Larry Gold (The Studio) and James Poyser (Erykah Badu’s producer), rubbing shoulders with the likes of avant garde jazz fiend Elliot Levin, Delta 72, and stylish triphop band Sweetie. The scene was black tie, but the vibe was down home as the ceremony went off. ‘Nuff respect to all bands, producers, composers and performers that represented, thanks to the support of the awesome Philly scene. In the dj /club culture scene, let me break it down like this: award for the best dj in the scratching category, all props to dj Cosmo. Cosmo got his chops at NY’s Den of Thieves (now Idlewilde) rocking 3 turntables every weekend till the wee hours. His Monday night hiphop jam ” the Remedy” at Fluid nightclub is off da hook!.His insane energy and open- minded style of dj-ing edged him out over the legendary Jazzy Jeff, dj Active and GFS jungle turntabalist dj J-Smooth. In the category best dj (mixer) I’m not gonna front, yours truly Cozmic Cat came first in the mix!!! A nomination alongside dj Dozia, Rob Paine and Deep C, is an honor, so let me just say that this was a wicked feeling , being the 1st female dj to win …So rock on all grrrl djs and thanks to the friends and supporters that make the gigs a real party. Philly kicks @ss! <This one’s for the ladies! > In the club scene news,.SoMa Lounge (33 s 3rd) officially opens and it’s a cutie! It’s also a new job for this cat booking djs there and hooking up the vibe Thursdays and Saturday nights…
