The January Effect

Oh don’t think I haven’t been writing lately. I’ve been writing alright. Writing a lot of fucking checks! Trying to play catch up with the bills that were ignored during the holiday season. It happens to me every year. Thus, I have redefined the term, “The January Effect.” This term is most commonly used in the securities industry and describes the seasonal bounce in small-cap stocks. I however, use it to describe the seasonal bounce in my small checking account. But even though I ain’t got money…I’m still havin’ lots of fun honey…So let me tell you all about it.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Music

American Pearl @ The Pretty Ugly Club – Hollywood, CA
Hailing from the oyster known as Hollywood, California. WInd-Up recording artist American Pearl take the quaint stage at Hollywood’s Pretty Ugly club after opening act, TURD. You may have heard the single, “Free Your Mind” on local radio stations. If not, you probably will soon. I for one would like to welcome back rock ‘n’ roll music. It’s so refreshing to see a traditional rock ‘n’ roll band. You’ll find No DJ’s, No rapping, No Mixmasters on the ones and twos here buddy. It’s just four guys rockin’ the house just like the days of old. God bless them.

The ABC strikes again
Daimon’s Japanese Restaurant – Sunset Beach, CA
Does this man look familiar? Sure he does. You remember…He’s the infamous, “Penis Rice Man” that you went down on after slamming your fourth sake bomb at your birthday party last year. What do you mean you don’t remember? Sure you do. Everyone was there. Everyone’s always there! At least they used to be…

Do not be fooled. The name is the same, the food is the same… the atmosphere is NOT the same. It’s dead! But at least Daimon’s is still in operation. The ABC and the city of Huntington Beach gave the very popular restaurant a new lease on life. All they had to do was stop having so much fun. According to our chef (with whom we had the complete attention of because we were the only two people at teppan table); Apparently all the ruckus made by the rowdy patrons in the parking lot every night was upsetting the neighboring tight-asses. And the occasional consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors of course didn’t help things.

I say, “If it’s too loud, join the party. And if you don’t know how to party, it’s time to move on over to the old folks home!” And to those under the legal drinking age, “Get a decent fake I.D. or DON’T DRINK! You’ll ruin it for everyone!”

So what exactly happened? Daimon’s closed temporarily in November of 2000 as punishment for violating a few ABC rules & regs. During the closure they completely remodeled and transformed our favorite party palace into a “Traditional” Japanese restaurant which reopened in December. Say goodbye to the flame painted walls, rock ‘n’ roll music, self-serve beer cooler and of course the beloved penis rice man. For he is no longer welcome in this “Family” restaurant.

Remain calm party people. There is a place to fill your void and your stomach. It’s called Wasabi and it’s in Long Beach. Wasabi opened in September of 2000 and is owned by the same people that own Daimon’s. So the party’s not over, it’s just been relocated. And of course…the penis rice man lives on.

Rebel From The Waist Down
Guns, God and Government World Tour, Universal Amphitheater – Los Angeles, CA
Makin’ headlines and showing plenty of ass in true Manson style. This was a show I could NOT miss. It seems like so long since the Mechanical Animals tour for which I was fortunate enough to attend in ’99 before the tour was halted due to an injury that Manson suffered to his foot (I’m guessing from those stilts). That tour was my first live experience with the God of Shock and it was all I needed to become a huge fan. Not since the likes of KISS have I seen such theatrics on stage. He won my heart with the pyrotechnics, costumes and props. So naturally I was expecting to be amazed once again only to find a much more subdued performance this time around. Nevertheless, it was another great performance by the bare-assed rocker and his opening band Godhead. The religious picketers out front were a great touch too. You can’t beat free advertising!

FREE METAL!
Free Mondays @ Troubadour – Los Angeles, CA
It’s not often these days you find anything that’s truly free and worth while. That’s why free Mondays at the Troubadour are so fabulous! Sometimes you’ll find the greatest bands just rockin’ the hell outta that place. Like the last show I caught, Skin Lab (Century Media Records) and Famous (excellent unsigned band). Oh and did I mention, It’s FREE!

THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE
Club Grand Royale – Thursdays @ the Shark Club – Costa Mesa, CA
Late last year the popular club known as, “Grand Royale” left Buzz and made a new home for itself at the Shark Club. I finally had the chace to check it out recently and can now verify all the hype. Along with the new location, there seems to be a new crowd. Young, well dressed, well groomed, well spoken (I call them, “The Beautiful People”) all the people that seem like they’re from the right side of the tracks. And you can’t very well entertain the beautiful people without the beautiful music can you? Of course not. that’s where resident DJs Danny Love and Daniel step in to make the evening a completely beautiful experience.

Anyway, I gotta go. I have to take this phone call. It’s another bill collector wouldn’t you know it. If your interested in helping out the cause you may contact me at: barbie@coolgrrrls.com.
