Ok party people in the place to be!
Philly has got it like that, with the scene in high gear as djs , bands and promoters getting their groove on left right and center…Hallowe’en was a battle ground of sexy schoolgirls, furry Tigers, old school breakers , devils and pimps all over Old City and South st. The 5ive Spot hosted the “Don’t Fake the Funk” throwdown with djs Crystal Clear and Kate, alongside Blake and others, while Tommy Up’s Paperstreet “Scary Party” @ Club Life got the prize for the most people with the craziest vibe. Dressed as “crouching Cozmic, hidden Cat” This little dj spun with Cosmo Black in the Lounge while Dozia (Ovum records) and Christian James tore up the main floor. After the party i was so exhausted i almost fell asleep on the dancfloor, while Doz and CJ went on to spin at an afterhours club called Tribeca. I just don’t know where they get the energy!
Philly’s fav. hiphop icons The Roots blew the roof off the Electric Factory at their hallowe’en concert which was by all acounts amazing. The afterparty went live @ Transit with dj Jazzy jeff in the mix, fresh!
My hallowe’en also included a trip to the Trocadero theatre to see a free showing of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. it was a huge party scene up in there. That movie creeped me out on the real tip though…
The circus came to town! That funky Cirque Du Soliel pitched their tents @ Broad & Washington and showed Philly how to get down with a troup of acrobats, jugglers, trapeze artists and clowns. the show was incredably creative,. DOPE! i actually got to spin @ their premier party, which was like the opportunity of a lifetime, Everyone was super cool, and there were some crazy performances @ the party which took place in an undrground parking lot:, breakdancers, firedancers, live painting and lots of dancing of course!.Peace to Elizabeth Ann Doyle who was mad cool and hooked me and my peeps up with free tix!
Sightings! every week i play records @ SoMa Lounge, a tiny but fresh little spot in old city with great djs every night of the week and great regulars. Mondays belong to dj Deep C, a resident dj among other places @ Fabric in London Anyway last monday Janet Jackson came to SoMa and was chilling out to his set! She had mad security, and the place was packed. She was totally feelin’ Deep’s set, bobbin’ her head and drinking apple martinis for about 3 hours. Everyone was psyched she didn’t go to one of the huge glam spots in town, ms. jackson keepin’ it real!
Notable parties this week were Nicodemous ( from the famous Turntables on the Hudson party)coming down from NYC to rip up the monthly Soul Samba party. this party incorporates soul funk and bossa beats from djs Jugo, Milkyway and B5 alongside live percussionist and singers. Needless to say the party went oFF!
Cibucan (2025 sansom ) A Cuban reastaurant with a Skylit Lounge and a phat dj linup, and Latin drink specials…
Bash (6th & callowhill) a new club on the scene which straddles between huge venue and lounge with a warehouse feel, chandeliers, massive oil paintings on the walls, and lots of velvet. The sound system is bangin’ in the equally huge dj booth. MC Schooly D chilled with the Philadelphia Sixers and many other celebs at the VIP opening.
On the non-dj tip, a couple sundays ago marked the AIDS walk, where thousands of people got together for a beautifull 3 hour walk along Kelly Drive to raise money for the fight against AIDS. Along the way there were live bands, many of them fierce grrl bands as well as lots of free water and pretzles ( Philly style!) all in all it was a great day.
Check out “Kamal the abstract” it Q-tip’s new solo album with live jazz musicians on it. He also sings on it!
Oh yeah, The Avalaches ” Since i left you” its off the hizzy.
Also the new Femi Kuti album is dope.
