It ain’t over till it’s over.
The Last Five Years is based on a relationship that has come to an end and how the former couple is dealing with the breakup. Each and every line during the show is sung by the two characters. Both leads have strong vocal abilities, however, I would have like to have heard a few of the scenes in a spoken tone as well. It wasn’t anything like the Umbrella’s of Chernbourg, but it was just as sad and thought-provoking.
The male confesses to how every fantasy woman he ever dreamed of is now dying to sleep with him now that he is married and in a committed relationship.
The female displays distraught emotions over the recent breakup.
During the middle of the performance, the audience learns more about the chemistry between the two as they reflect on opening presents together during Christmas.
As the two pick up the pieces and try to start a new life being single, the ex-wife decides to focus strictly on her acting career. The ex-husband recalls the day he asked his former partner to be his wife.
All-in-all the concept of the story was extremely thought-provoking. Having gone through a recent breakup myself it was almost insightful watching someone’s emotions and sharing their pain. I would recommend seeing the Last Five Years to anyone else who seems to have trouble putting a past relationship into perspective. It was truly unique and educating at the same time.
