Samoans…love them
I am now totally convinced that there is ONE man who knows the history and details of EVERY punk moment since the seventies until today. That man is Metal Mike, singer of the Angry Samoans. I went to go see them play this past Sunday at the Galaxy.
Along with the Samoans were a few other goodies, like Blockage and the good ol’ boys from Split Decision who to my pleasure was now being fronted by the old singer from Mr. Firley… Scott. What a great show they put on, topping their set off with a Circle Jerks cover. Those boys are so talented, tight, and charming… did I mention witty? I smiled and rocked in my seat through their whole set. Above the whole scene that night, these boys were worth every penny the people paid to get in there that night. Last time I saw these boys live was quite a while back when we played the International Mountain Boarding Championships in Angeles Crest. They frickin ROCKED then, and they frickin ROCK now! No disappointments there… and if the boys read this… I think the song Blue Flame should be resurrected. REGARDLESS of where it originated. (just my 2 cents)
Blockage- I did mention them earlier right? How could anyone not mention them. It was a set filled with “in key” harmonies, and great lyrics. “Will I stand Tall? Will I know it all? Will I turn my head? And see it ALL?” A song called Her World and Mine… it made me think… and what was it about? This is the cool part- they told me it was about a sculpture who wants to come to life to meet her maker. Sounds familiar to me… the girl who wants to know why my Higher Power made me the way I am… and the questions I would ask myself… ooooh, I’m tearing up here. They are playing at the Whiskey on October 29th if you’re wondering. I just may see you there. By the way, I got to talk to them (obviously) after the show and asked them some questions, they impressed me with their warmness and humbleness. And ya gotta love a group of guys who support female punk rock! Especially when they say they have a “Weakness for it”. Not typical punk rock- think Punk Rock rooted in Rock n’ Roll. JUICY!
And once again, The Angry Samoans. One of my favorite CD’s in my case. Yet, I am so ashamed of OC punkers on this day. Where were you? If anything, you would’ve loved a guy that I think I am probably bigger than- calling someone Buckwheat from the stage and pissing them off while telling them because he has cookie monster on his shirt, he could kick his ass… lol. His salutation? Good morning Woodstock Santa Ana. Huh? Exactly… next comment… we don’t give a FUCK! The songs? Well, there was Electrocute your cock, Hitlers Cock, homosexual, Right side of my mind, get off the air, Carson girls, and on and on- one after another after another… I barely had time to breathe. But I did get my breath when they broke out with Jesse’s Girl by Rick Springfield. HUH? Exactly!!! And did I mention they played Highway to Hell by ACDC? They had fun humiliating their fans… HUH? Exactly!. Punk as fuck… maybe. I do have to say again that if anyone EVER wants to know the history of Punk Rock… I implore you to find Metal Mike and ask him. He was a pleasure to talk to and in the future, when I have time to go through the 45 minutes of cassette I have of our conversation, I’ll be sure to write some more on it.
Toodles,
Franki
