Who are the Cool Grrrls? The Cool Grrrls are a web site based alliance that is dedicated to promoting female musicians everywhere. This CD combines grrrl bands from Argentina, France, Australia, and New York to give you the sugar and spice of female musicians, and also throws in some attitude and sass. The Devil Dolls, from Los Angeles, start this album off with a hard rockin track, "St. Christopher." (By far my favorite.) The Hi- Tops from Germany give us a Rancid- esque track called "Bubblegum." Overall, if you love the likes of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, L7, or Hole, you'll truley appreciate this album.

V/A – Cool Grrrls Kick Ass Vol.2 CD
(www.coolgrrrls.com)

Various Artists - Cool Grrrls Kick Ass! Vol. 2
The Worldwide Girls Guide To All That Grooves

Tracklist:

Devil Dolls — St. Christopher
Candy Ass — Ain’t Like U
Shoot The Genie — Not Brave Enough

The Kowalskis — Road To Barstow
Hyperstatic — Bsides
The Randies — Boys In Stereo
Get The Girl — Shut Up
Bang Sugar Bang — The Push Kids
The Cherry Pops — Told You A Lie
The Waukees — Stay Me With
Curlee Wurlee — Pas de Panique

The Heroines — Welcome To The Band

Cool Grrrls Kick Ass!, the mix CD from coolgrrrls.com gets an A+

As I sit here glued to my chair brainstorming enough complimentary words to use in this review, I am sporting a skinny, ribbed white tank top with the coolgrrrls.com logo scrawled across it in black ink. It's the shirt they used to wrap my CD in while it sat in the mail. This 16-track compilation CD from one of the grooviest websites out there is all about connecting musicians and grrrls from all around the world. Among the featured bands is Tirany from Melbourne, Australia with "So Long," Orange County, CA's Get the Girl with "Traffic Jam," Calgary, Canada's Riff Randells with "Lethal Lipgloss," and Columbus, Ohio's Manda and the Marbles with "Dangerous." These smashing bands are joined by twelve other rockin' groups that will have you out of your seat in no time. You'll want to grab a pair of fishnets or snazzy red heels, grab some friends an hit the clubs. Actually, better yet, stay at home where you can keep repeating the songs over and over and over... This CD will be like your best friend-- there through your rough breakup, listening intently while you gossip about the stupid bitch ("Bitch" by Barbee Killed Kenn), and even ready to help your stumbling self home after a few too many ("Drunk" - Boobie Trap). The more you listen to this recording, the more you'll love it. All must agree: these chicks can ROCK! Get your paws on this incredible, revolutionary compilation CD. Kudos to coolgrrrls.com!

V.A. – Cool Grrrls Kick Ass! CD
OX Fanzine #51

The website www.coolgrrrls.com is an Indie-Rock/Punk-forum by grrrls for grrrls but for guys, as well. Frank Davern, who is the publisher, has been extending coolgrrrls for a couple of years and cool grrrls all over the world take part in it and write for the website. It’s about punkrock, concerts, shows, sports and many many more. But let’s talk about the CD: It took a long time until the idea of a compilation was eventually realised but then it was completed faster than I actually expected it. Punkrock and Riot-Rock by girlz only! The title of the compilation "Cool Grrrls Kick Ass" is what you get on the CD. Because these 16 bands are rocking it kinda like the Donnas, Mensen or Sleater-Kinney. My favourites on this compilation are Moler, The Hissyfits, Manda And The Marbles, Lava Baby, Riff Randels and Tirany. But the other bands are great, too. If you are a regular of Thunderbaby Records or Kill Rock Star you shouldn’t wait any longer and order that CD! Unfortunately a distribution for the CD hasn’t been found yet in Europe but nowadays one can order stuff via internet. Just click on www.coolgrrrls.com and order the CD. And who has found on that compilation what he has always been looking for... Volume 2 is about to be released!

V/A – Cool Grrrls Kick Ass ! CD

The title of this cd says it all. The first compilation from the indie rock website www.coolgrrrls.com, this cd is utterly amazing. It is the model for indie rock at its finest. Cool Grrrls Kick Ass is an explosion of elite, wildly powerful music-a celebration of being a Grrl. Most bands that are featured on the cd have at least one member that writes for or contributes to coolgrrrls.com in some way-but the cd makes it obvious that these grrrls can do way more than just write and report. Their music is fresh, enjoyable and just plain rockin'. It is obvious that every one of these bands put their heart and soul into their music-and it pays off in a big way. Over processed bubblegum pop has nothing on the underground indie scene. There is nothing better than bands that write their own music and play with a message. Cool Grrrls Kick Ass-unquestionably lives up to its title. Songs like "Bitch", "Lethal Lipgloss" and "Dangerous" seem innocent enough, but rock with raw feminine power. Every song on this cd proves that sweet innocent eyelash-batting chicks can play music that can kick ya right in the teeth. These bands prove being a grrl is not for the faint of heart or the weak of spirit. If you are ever sent to a desert island with one cd-let this be it! I cant help but admire the ambition and love of music that every band possesses. After listening to this you are left with a residue of energy that cannot be matched. A grrrl cannot live on music alone-but if she could Cool Grrrls Kick Ass would be a required daily nutrition supplement- guaranteed!

Yeah, ok, the whole "grrrls" thing is played out. "Girls" alone will do. Despite the "it makes me wanna puke" album title, this compilation (sponsored by the webzine, http:///www.coolgrrrls.com) is not just another compilation of "girls gone wild" pop-punk tailored to those girls who are afraid to pump their fists at a real rock show. The mix is actually decent, with some stellar tracks by The Hissyfits, The Drive, Tirany, The Organ, Dada Stunt Girl, and Get the Girl. A few tracks are so cheesy, but in that oh-so-good way! Let's put it this way, It's the best music to sing along to when you're pulling those sexy fishnets over your knees and you and your hot friends are getting silly on cheap liquor before the show. And trust me, if you listen to this disc before a night of alcohol-fueled debauchery, you'll be more then ready for all the bullshit.

I’d be lying if I claimed no bias in rating Cool Grrrls Kick Ass! Lying with my fingers crossed behind my back, my toes curled over each other for good measure, and my eyes trained on the floor so no one could behold their deceitful glint. With that said, let me also say that I never develop biases without good reason. And in this case, my Cool Grrrls Kick Ass bias boils down to the fact that the website that produced it means so much to me. For almost two years coolgrrrls.com has been my haven. A sanctuary that wraps me in a warm blanket any time I get down in the dumps about the state of the music industry. An internet palace where grrrls are always royalty, and their need to rock through life is celebrated.

The website’s first ever compilation CD serves the same purpose. It has sixteen tracks from girl bands across the world, each one jamming louder and harder than the next. All it took was one spin on my stereo before I was convinced that this record is the definitive soundtrack to my life. Tirany kicks things off with So Long, a frisky independence anthem celebrating a girl’s need to do her own thing. Lava Baby isn’t far behind on Sex Junkie, a poppy tune with an irresistible chorus and enough "doo do do do doos" to fill my head for hours. And The Hissyfits, one of my old favorites, bust through the speakers with the grinding bass and haunting lyrics of Something Wrong 2001. But those tracks aren’t the only ones worth mentioning. Gore Gore Girls put the bad back into badass when they bang away on Hot Rod Breakdown. Manda and the Marbles revive the best aspects of 80’s rock with Dangerous. Riff Randells bring glory to the power chord on Lethal Lipgloss. And Dada Stunt Girl reminds us of the importance of feminism, urgently chanting, "Come on girls let’s liberate. Come on girls let’s educate…" on their fist-raising, heart-pounding groove, Femmenstruation Liberation.

I could go on, but gushing anymore might remind you of that bias I previously mentioned. It might make you think that I’m only plugging this CD because I write for the site. And that’s not true. Coolgrrrls.com has and always will hold a special place in my heart, but my love for the webzine has nothing to do with my love for Cool Grrrls Kick Ass! The latter love was spawned in response to the hearty spirit and superior quality of the album’s music. If you don’t believe me, check it out yourself. You’ll see that this collective effort kicks ass, takes names, and knocks down walls, all in the the name of fun and good music.
