bands we like rollins band & wayne kramer @ spaceland

Talk about your killer show. Talk about energy and adrenaline and wah wah pedals. Talk about sweat and funky punk and scorching guitars. And lyrics. And energy!!!-did I say that already?Last night's show at Spaceland was an epic display of artistic talent and raw emotion. Both Rollins and Kramer tore up the stage and had the capacity crowd ragin' and screamin' along with them. The Rollins Band opened and introduced a new song, "Your Number is One," which is destined to become a classic. They sounded better than ever, with more of a funkadelic feel to their music than just straight thrash punk. In fact, it's the only time I've seen Henry where there was no mosh pit in front-just everyone groovin' and bouncing and bangin' their heads! In addition to their own new and old material, they did a couple Thin Lizzy numbers-and owned 'em! Henry teased that the real show was to come afterwards, as he was just a last minute opening act who begged to get on the bill because he's dying to play. Right! The Rollins Band just shredded and Henry was on, as he always is, going Richter all over that stage, setting the place ablaze for headliner, Wayne Kramer.

Usually it's hard to follow an act like Henry's but Wayne Kramer of MC5 fame is more than up to that task. He's probably one of the best songwriters ever and certainly one gifted guitar player. His band is incredible too and last night was joined by Frank of The Street Walkin' Cheetahs who sang back-ups, played cow bell and tambourine, and ultimately performed dueling guitars with Wayne at the climax of the show-f*#king amazing, kids! David Was also jammed on harmonica but it was Wayne himself who stole the show. His MC5-infused grooviness just boils the blood and makes your hips sway and body gyrate. His trademark wah wah sound is matched in coolness only by the lyrics of his brilliant songs, which speak of everything from the plight of junkies to taking down the man. The Kramer band puts on such a killer show it's impossible to capture it in words-you simply gotta experience it to believe it. If you can't see him live, at least grab yourself all the old MC5 recordings-Rhino's just re-released a bunch-and get a taste of what I'm talking about. Wayne is one big reason why Detroit will forever be known as Rock City and he's one act not to be missed. Below is a photo gallery of the show-enjoy!!!
